Every year a number of unaccompanied children die when trying to cross the Rio Grande River illegally.
In the first half of 2015, 18,500 unaccompanied children were detained at the U.S. - Mexico border.
From January to June 2016, Border Patrol intersected 26,000 undocumented children-- about a 40% increase up last year. Most of these children are from Central America and Mexico and in most cases die because of the hot temperatures. Authorities recommend U.S. Families warn their families in Mexico not to cross because of the life threatening dangers they can face.
